Live Update from another site

Abstract

Some offices do not have (or do not wish to have) an internet connection. This can make Live Updates for that site somewhat problematic. This article describes a procedure that will allow an office to perform a Live Update at another location that does have an internet connection, and then copy the necessary files to update the site that does not have the internet connection.

Underlying challenge

When a Live Update is performed, Capable 21C cross checks the database against the version that is being downloaded to protect the integrity and privacy of the owner of the licence and the data on the computer. This means that a Live Update performed on one computer would not normally be able to be copied to another computer. If it were copied to another computer, Capable 21C would refuse to open. The instructions below explain how to perform the Live Update on another computer, copy the file(s) across to the desired target computer, and still have Capable 21C function properly.

Note that this knowledgebase article assumes that the reader has some understanding of the procedures of copying files from one computer to another. For the purposes of this article, a memory stick or re-writeable CD is assumed to be the media for the copy. /p>

Resolution

The procedure involves copying the Capable 21C database to the computer that does have the internet connection. The specific steps are:

  • Install Capable 21C on the computer that has the internet connection.
  • Do NOT start Capable 21C on this computer yet.
  • Copy the database from the computer that does not have an internet connection to the computer that does have the internet connection.
  • Start Capable 21C on the computer that does have the internet connection.
  • Capable 21C may prompt to perform a Live Update immediately upon start. Say No. On some older versions of Capable 21C, choosing Yes at this prompt may trigger a known defect that causes Capable 21C to stop responding.
  • Once Capable 21C is open, choose the Live Update menu at the top of the Capable 21C main screen.
  • Follow the prompts normally to complete the Live Update.
  • After the Live Update is complete, copy the Capable 21C program file to the computer that does not have an internet connection.
  • Detailed Information

To successfully copy the desired files from one PC to another, it is assumed that a re-writeable CD or a USB memory stick will be used. Floppy disks are inadequate as they do not store sufficient information to complete the transfer.

To copy the database from one computer to another:

  • On the computer that does not have the internet connection, copy the entire contents of the C:\Capable folder to the chosen media.
  • On the computer that does have the internet connection, copy the entire contents of the chosen media into the C:\Capable folder.
  • To copy the Capable 21C program from one computer to another:

  • On the computer that has just been Live Updated, copy the Capable.EXE file from the C:\Program Files\Capable folder onto the chosen media.
  • On the computer that is to receive the update manually, copy the Capable.EXE file from the chosen media into the C:\Program Files\Capable folder.
